UGA Student Indicted for Making 'AK' Threat on Campus

A University of Georgia student has been indicted for a September threat on social media that warned of possible shootings on campus.
The threat, posted Sept. 19 on the Yik Yak mobile app warned people to stay away from the Zell Miller Learning Center “if you want to live,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The center was evacuated during the noon hour, but considered all-clear a short time later.
The Athens Banner-Herald reported Ariel Omar Arias, 19, was indicted by a Clarke County grand jury on four counts of making terroristic threats, a felony. Each charge carries a 5-year jail sentence, if he is convicted.

The newspaper reported the threat also contained the phrase “I’m coming with an AK.”
UGA Police said it received several reports of the threat around 11:35 a.m. on Sept. 19. An all-clear alert was sent at 1:08 p.m.

Arias was arrested the same day. “In an interview with investigators, Arias admitted to disseminating the post in question and indicated that the incident was the result of an immature prank and that he had no motive to follow through with any acts of violence,” UGA Police said on Facebook following the arrest.
Arias reportedly attended Parkview High School in Gwinnett County, according the Athens newspaper.
