Ice Storm: Most of 173,000 Without Power Were Outside of Metro Atlanta

Georgia Power's busy day Wednesday during the height of the ice storm got even busier after the sun went down, with 173,000 customers without power as of 10:30 p.m. Most of the new outages were well outside metro Atlanta, with around 70,000 in the Augusta area. Less than 500 GP customers were without power in Patch communities.

Also as of 10:30 p.m.:

Only 11 Walton EMC customers were in the dark.

GreyStone Power reports 1,400 were without power.

Jackson EMC had 31 outages.

Amicalola EMC had 278 outages, 80 of which were in Cherokee County.

The number of Georgia Power customers impacted by power outages is up to 140,000 statewide. Most of the problems remain south of I-20, but north of that line still has widespread outages, the largest number 1,600 in the Suwanee area in Gwinnett County, where it's been sleeting most of the afternoon.

Walton EMC has 1,800 customers out, most all in the Lilburn/Snellville/Lawrenceville, also in Gwinnett.

GreyStone Power reports 2,500 are without power, still mostly in the southern end of its service area, but down from the numbers earlier in the day.

Jackson EMC has spotty outages in Hall, Gwinnett, Banks, Barrow and Madison counties.

Amicalola EMC has 300 outages in Cherokee, Gilmer and Pickens counties.

Around 100 are without power in Cobb EMC at last report.

Most of the 131,000 Georgia Power customers without power fall south of I-20, according to the company's outage map. The biggest outage areas in Patch communities are Stone Mountain, Tucker, Sandy Springs, Decatur, Dunwoody and Lithonia.

Walton EMC has 3,600 customers out, most in an area south of Winder in Barrow County stretching into Oconee County.

GreyStone Power reports 3,200 are without power, still mostly in the southern end of its service area, in Fayette and Coweta counties. 

Jackson EMC says most of its 132 outages are between I-85 an I-285 in Gwinnett County.

Cobb EMC and Amicalola EMC report 100 or fewer outages.

The number of Georgia Power customers without power increased to 134,000, with the hardest-hit areas south and east of the City of Atlanta.

Jackson EMC reported only five outages in Barrow County.

Walton EMC has around 2,000 outages, with 1,800 of those in an area between Lilburn, Snellville and Lawrenceville, near Ronald Reagan Parkway.

With crews working on removing downed trees has Cobb EMC down to 109 without power, according to its Facebook page.

GreyStone Power reports 3,600 are without power, mostly in the southern end of its service area, in Fayette and Coweta counties. 

Amicalola EMC has restored power to the almost 600 residences that were without earlier

Georgia Power reports widespread outages affecting 57,000 customers statewide, with the hardest-hit areas so far being south of Atlanta and north Fulton County. 2,000 customers have lost power in North Fulton, from Sandy Springs northward. Around 30,000 are out of south of I-285, between I-85 and I-75 in the south metro.

Amicalola EMC (north) reported 581 outages. Cobb EMC says 93 are without power.

Jackson EMC (east), Sawnee EMC (north) report no outages.

Call Tuesday, Feb. 11, the calm before the storm for power companies serving Patch communities in Georgia.

As of 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, only a handful of power outages were reported across the region.

Things are expected to change overnight with the arrival of the winter storm that is forecasted to dump snow and ice.
