1. Decatur Book Festival returns to downtown Decatur Oct. 2 (decaturish.com) â Downtown Decatur will be buzzing this Friday and Saturday as the 21st annual Decatur Book Festival brings more than 80 authors, free talks, signings, and a big street fair to the Square and nearby venues. Events run Oct. 2â3, including a free keynote at First Baptist Church of Decatur, family programming, student readings at Decatur Library, and several new interactive features.

2. Decluttering program launches through October (thechampionnewspaper.com) â DeKalb County is making it easier for Decatur residents to clear clutter in October with free bulky-item pickup on designated days and a free paper-shredding event at the Central Transfer Station on Leroy Scott Drive in Decatur. Residents can set out furniture, appliances, and electronics on scheduled dates and bring up to 10 boxes of documents for secure shredding on Oct. 17.

3. CuevacĂa opening second location at Lulah Hills development (decaturish.com) â A new CuevacĂa restaurant is coming to the Lulah Hills redevelopment at the former North DeKalb Mall site, bringing an immersive Oaxacan dining experience close to Decatur neighborhoods. The massive mixed-use project will add nearly 2,000 housing units, workforce housing, and a strong lineup of retail and restaurants, with first openings expected in early 2027.

4. Decatur senior baseball league seeking new players (decaturish.com) â Older athletes around Decatur who still love baseball are being invited to join a growing senior league that practices weekly at Medlock Park in Greater Decatur. Organizers, whose players range into their 80s, hope to add enough new members this fall to field multiple teams and keep competitive, age-defying baseball alive close to home.

5. VA awards $3.4 million to organizations working to strengthen community-based suicide prevention efforts in Georgia (va.gov) â From its Decatur office, the VA has announced $3.4 million in grants for seven Georgia organizations working on veteran suicide prevention, with funds available at the start of fiscal 2027. Local veterans and families can benefit through expanded community-based services, crisis support, and connections to VA care, including the always-available Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then Press 1.
