Woodward Student from Decatur Interns with Green Schools Alliance

Woodward Academy senior Charlie Marcus, of Decatur, is serving as an intern for the Green Schools Alliance (GSA), representing nine states as the regional coordinator and advisor to the southern region. In this role, Charlie assists Alliance member schools with their Sustainable Action Plans—which could include anything from reducing energy and water usage to finding local food sources for cafeterias or starting a roof garden. He also hopes to coordinate a sustainability conference for student leaders from Atlanta, or perhaps all of Georgia.

He was selected as an intern from a pool of about 50 applicants after being invited to the Student Climate & Conservation Congress, a five-day conference held in June by the GSA in collaboration with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, W.Va. In his second year as president of Woodward Academy’s Environmental Awareness Club, Charlie also serves as the student member of the Academy’s Sustainability Council.

Charlie says he has been drawn to nature and environmental causes since he was a young child. “The love that I have for nature kind of grew into this will to protect it,” he said. “I feel like it’s my duty to work to help maintain the Earth’s stability and the Earth’s beauty.”
