Artist Chosen For MARTA Overpass Mural Project

The winner was chosen from 38 entries and will paint the overpass at West Trinity and Atlanta Avenue in Decatur.

DECATUR, GA -- The MILAGROS Collective, a team of artists from Miami and New Orleans, has been selected to paint a mural for Decatur's MARTA Overpass Mural Project.

Last year, the city received a $15,000 grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission to help pay for a mural on the overpass, at West Trinity and Atlanta Avenue.

The MILAGROS Collective is made up of Felici Asteinza, a native of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and Joey Fillastre, a Lakeland, Florida, native.

The pair have extensive mural experience, including a public art commission for the New Orleans public library, a museum in Greensboro, North Carolina, and a public project on a parking garage in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Decatur Arts Alliance and the Steering Committee for the MARTA Overpass Mural Project selected MILAGROS from a field of 38 entries in the contest. Recently, the field had been narrowed to five finalists, who met with the committee and other stakeholders for one-on-one interviews.

Angie Macon, director of the Decatur Arts Alliance, said what set MILAGROS apart was their extensive community-engagement experience on their other projects. She said they have demonstrated a commitment to and excitement for the community-engagement aspect of their projects.

Next, The MILAGROS Collective will be meeting members of the community and begin a series of stakeholder meetings in May.

Completion of the mural is estimated to come in the Fall of this year.
