Cop Who Killed Naked Man Pleads Not Guilty

The shooting of Anthony Hill in Chamblee has rallied supporters, who call for better police response to mental illness.

DECATUR, GA -- A DeKalb County police officer who shot and killed a naked man pleaded not-guilty in a Decatur courtroom Monday.

Robert Olsen, who has since resigned from the police force, waived arraignment in his felony murder case. His attorney, Don Samuel, entered the not-guilty plea for him.

Olsen is charged in the March 9, 2015 death of Anthony Hill.

Hill, 27, was shot and killed by Olsen last March. Hill, an Air Force veteran who friends say suffered from bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress, was naked, knocking on doors of a Chamblee apartment complex and crawling on his hands and knees, according to police reports.

Olsen, who is white, has said he thought Hill, who was black, was high on drugs and that he feared for his safety. Police say Hill ran toward officers and did not obey commands to stop.

Supporters of Hill have called for better mental-health response from police officers.

"We still have to get mental health response units in DeKalb County, nationwide and just really want to get the word out that mental illness is not a crime," Bridget Anderson, Hill's girlfriend, said during a vigil in March, according to WXIA-TV.

Anderson has said Hill had recently stopped taking his medications before the incident last year.

Initially, a civil grand jury considered the case, but did not recommend charges against Olsen. DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James later brought charges himself in the case.
