Officer Who Shot Naked Man Has Resigned, Police Say

DeKalb officer Robert Olsen was indicted last week on felony murder and other charges.

DECATUR, GA -- The DeKalb County Police officer who shot and killed an unarmed, naked Air Force veteran has resigned, police say.

Officer Robert Olsen was indicted last week on felony murder and other charges in the death of 27-year-old Anthony Hill.

Maj. Stephen Fore with the DeKalb County Police Department told media outlets that Olsen resigned from the department Monday.

“In all likelihood he would’ve been terminated,” Fore told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The shooting took place last year at the Heights of Chamblee apartment complex. Hill was reported walking naked outside his apartment. A call to 911 brought Olsen to the scene, where he then shot and killed Hill.

Hill’s family has said he suffered from mental illness and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while serving in the Air Force. Olsen, who is white, has said he thought Hill, who was black, was high on drugs and that he feared for his safety.

Hill’s cause has been taken up by activists who say they are seeking justice for his death. A group of demonstrators camped out at the DeKalb County Courthouse on some of the coldest nights of the year in anticipation of Olsen’s indictment, which was handed down Thursday evening.

Olsen’s attorney, Don Samuel, has said his client will be exonerated once all of the evidence is heard at trial.
