The Decatur Business Association is bringing in 60 tons of sand to transform Ponce de Leon Avenue, temporarily, into a little slice of coastal living.

There will be a kids boardwalk, live music and dancing on the plaza, and a food court complete with funnel cakes and fruity drinks with straws in them.

The Decatur Business Association produces the Decatur Beach Party as an annual fundraiser. Proceeds from this event help to fund other free community events including Concerts on the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, Easter Egg Hunt, and the Bonfire & Marshmallow Roast.

The beach party had become an annual tradition in Decatur until last year, when it was replaced by Slide the City, a waterslide-themed event that was checkered with problems -- most notably when a county work crew hit a fire hydrant the Thursday before the event, leading to days of low water pressure and a countywide boil-water advisory.

Decatur officials announced in January that, this year, the beach party was back on.
