U.S. News and World Report's annual ranking of the nation's high schools puts Decatur High School in good stead within Georgia.

Decatur High School students who are looking forward to a summer off can rest assured knowing the education they received this year was among the best in the state, according to a new report.

U.S. News and World Report ranks DHS the 17th best high school in Georgia in its yearly ranking of the nation’s secondary schools. Decatur High was praised for its 14 to 1 teacher/student ratio, it’s high percentage of students taking and passing AP exams, and its high English and math proficiency.
Other DeKalb schools received high rankings, as well; the DeKalb School of the Arts in Avondale Estates was ranked the fourth-best school in the state, while Chamblee Charter High School came in at #12 on the list.

In order to judge schools, U.S. News and World Report first decided if a school was performing than its state’s statistical average. If it was, researchers then looked to see if the school’s minority and disadvantaged students were also performing above state norms. If so, the school was then judged on how college-ready its students were by tracking AP or International Baccalaureate exam results.
