Noel Maloof is now CSD’s Chief Operating Officer after he was appointed by outgoing Superintendent Phyllis Edwards on Thursday night. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that some veteran teachers at Decatur High School were unhappy with Maloof but Edwards told the paper that their discontent was not a factor in Maloof’s promotion.

Replacing Maloof at DHS is veteran CSD employee Arlethea Williams; Maloof will remain at the high school for an undetermined amount of time to help Williams and her new administration transition into leadership roles at the school.

Maloof is replacing Kiawana Kennedy, who was becoming more and more visible and prominent at CSD meetings and functions before leaving for the Griffin-Spalding County school system. Maloof may inherit Kennedy’s added responsibilities, making close to a second-in-command the likes of which hasn’t been seen since Associate Superintendent Thomas Van Soelen resigned in 2013, the AJC says.
