The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Martin Emanuel, 71, was able to send a text message to his wife on Wednesday morning, four days after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the Himalayan country and left at least 6,000 people dead. Emanuel was with a friend and guide trekking north of the city of Kathmandu when the quake struck.

Emanuel’s guide, Dilli Magar, was also able to get out word that he was alive and well, the AJC said.

Emanuel’s family back in Decatur told the AJC that they’re trying to help Marty reach safety by compiling a list of telephone numbers he and Dilli can use to get immediate help and a list of places the pair can travel to before Marty returns to the U.S.

Emanuel is a sculptor and a long-time faculty member at the Atlanta College of Art, according to the AJC.
