UPDATE: DeKalb Animal Shelter Worker Attacked by Pit Bull Mix

The worker will recover and even made an appearance at the shelter on Wednesday; the dog was euthanized.

A worker at the DeKalb County Animal Shelter is at home recovering from injuries she received when she was suddenly attacked by a pit bull mix at the shelter earlier this week.

The worker was attacked after she fell down outside an office; the pit bull mix jumped out of his collar, jumped over the fence in the office doorway, and went after the worker’s arm, WSB-TV reports. The pit bull mix named Waldo had been brought up front to serve as an ’office dog’ after three months at the shelter.

Shelter employees had to dump a bucket of water on Waldo to get him to stop attacking the fallen worker, the station said.

Karen Hirsch of LifeLine Animal Project tells Patch that the injured worker came by the shelter on Wednesday to let everyone know she was doing well; she had been released from the hospital following surgery on Minday, WSB-TV says.

Hirsch says that the LifeLine cared for 15,559 animals at its shelters last year and did not record a single attack, and adds that the DeKalb shelter attack “was an unusual and very unfortunate incident.”

“What we don’t want,” Hirsch says, “is people to hear this news and be scared to come in and adopt. We have so many great animals available who are deserving of great homes.”
