Former DeKalb Police Officer Sentenced for Soliciting on the Job

Michael Cooper admitted he paid for sex while on the clock, and was given a prison term by a DeKalb County judge.

A one-time DeKalb County police officer has pleaded guilty to violating his oath of office and will spend one year behind bars, the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

Michael Cooper, 40, admitted to soliciting prostitutes while on duty and was given a 10-year sentence for violating his oath of office. He was fired on April 22, 2014. Cooper must serve one year of his sentence in prison, the DA’s Office said. He must also surrender his police officer certificate and is barred from working in law enforcement.

“Our officers are sworn to uphold the law. However, Michael Cooper violated the trust of the very community he was vowed to protect,” DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said in a statement.

Cooper must also pay a $2,000 fine, submit to an HIV test, and undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation within 60 days of his release from lockup, the DA’s Office said.
