Hello there, Decatur-Avondale Estates! I'm here in your inbox per usual to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on around town.

First, today's weather:

Very warm with clouds and sun. High: 96 Low: 76.

Here are the top three stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. The Georgia mental health commission began planning the next round of reforms. A few key priorities in the new reforms included pay rates, care coordination, and helping people with mental illness avoid the criminal justice system. State Department of Community Health Commissioner Caylee Noggle said, "this is one of the best budget and policy years the agency has seen in many, many years." (Effingham Herald)
  2. The documentary, "As If We Were Ghosts," will air on Jun. 13 at 9 p.m. on Georgia Public Broadcasting. The documentary honors the history of the Georgia Interscholastic Association, which has served Black athletes across the state during segregation. It features interviews with legendary athletes, including Walk Frazier, Wyomia Tyus and Rayfield Wright. (Moultrie Observer)
  3. A fatal shooting at the Exxon Gas Station in Decatur on Friday night is currently under investigation. Police reported finding a teenage male with an apparent gunshot wound when they arrived on the scene. The victim was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead. (CBS 46 News)

  • Wellroot Family Services shared the importance of reunification in foster care. According to Program Manager, SarTaj' Bush, reunification "shows grace for the biological parents. It allows the importance of making mistakes and improving on those mistakes. It also gives the children an opportunity to understand how you can be in a very bad spot in your life, however, you are able to build up from there." (Wellroot Family Services via Facebook)
  • LifeLine Animal Project is offering free dog and cat adoptions for all pets living in foster homes for the month of June, according to a press release. Lifeline asked residents to help with overcrowding in local area shelters by adopting. All adoption fees will be waved, and all adoptions include a spay or neuter, microchip and vaccinations. (Reporter Newspapers)
  • The Redan-Trotti Library's Virtual Writers Group will be sharing tips for creative writing during Writing Bites on Jun. 13 at 10 a.m. on YouTube. This video will focus on what writer's block is and how to move past it. (DeKalb County Public Library)
