Google Fiber Plans Delayed: City

The internet company will announce early next year its plans, which may bring super-fast internet to Decatur, Avondale Estates.

Google’s plan to hook up speedy Internet via Google Fiber to Decatur, Atlanta and other area cities has hit a speed bump.

According to the Decatur Minute blog, Google announced Thursday its leaders are delaying decisions nationwide related to the Google Fiber project. The company expects to make a public update sometime in early 2015.

The blog says: “Decatur continues to work with Google to answer questions about processes like permitting and communications. Allowing sufficient time for planning and engineering will help ensure a smooth and efficient process. The City of Decatur looks forward to our continued work with Google in 2015, and we remain optimistic about metro Atlanta’s prospects for selection.”

The residential service connections would be 100 times faster than the average for U.S. homes, says AJC.com.

“While we were hoping to have an update for cities before the holidays, we have a bit more work to wrap up; we’ll be back in touch sometime early next year,” spokesperson Kelly Mason told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We’ve been working closely with cities in metro Atlanta to figure out how we could bring them Google Fiber, and we’re grateful for their vision, commitment, and plain old hard work.”

Google is considering installing the high-speed network in Atlanta, Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs and Smyrna, the newspaper reports.

In October, AT&T said it will expand its GigaPower network to Decatur and the city of Atlanta, according to the company’s press release.

The all-fiber network bills itself on delivering speed of up to 1 gigabit per second and AT&T’s “most advanced” television services to consumers and small businesses, the company stated. Information on pricing and specific locations has not been released.
