How NOT to Get Your Vitamin D

Talking about sun exposure, and in this case, overexposure, seems an important topic to cover, given that the official start to summer is just a few days away.

I, like many people after the winter, somehow forgot that my skin hadn’t seen the light of day for many months when venturing onto the beach down at Tybee for the first time this season.  I thought, “it’s okay, I’ll go out for a while and soak up some vitamin D, and then put on a long sleeved t-shirt and get into the shade.  It will be good for me.”  As you can see from the photo above, it was not such a good plan after all!  The reality is that you may not feel that you’re burning until it’s way too late to do anything about it.  Instead of the 20-30 minutes of exposure that would have provided beneficial vitamin D and added a slight bit of color to my skin, I stupidly went out on a paddle board for nearly 2 hours.  Granted, it could have been much worse, had I not put the shirt on when I got back, but I still managed to give myself a first-degree burn – silly, silly me.

All joking aside, getting burned like this may increase your risk of skin cancer, and from a vanity perspective, will also age your skin, but what’s the best way to get safe limits of sun to ensure your vitamin D levels are topped up, and what’s the best protection when out in the sun for long periods of time?
