Man Sentenced In Prom-Night Crash That Killed Teacher

Lakeside High teacher Leah O'Brien was on her way to chaperone the same prom the driver who killed her was attending.

DECATUR, GA -- A DeKalb County man was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Tuesday for his role in a crash that killed a Lakeside high teacher on her way to the prom.

Ramiro Gerrardo Pedemonte, 20, of Tucker, pleaded guilty to first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and three counts of serious injury by vehicle, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The April 25, 2015 wreck killed one of Pedemonte's teachers, 33-year-old Leah O'Brien.

The crash, on Scott Boulevard, also injured O'Brien's 8-year-old daughter, Kori, who was in a coma for 13 days. O'Brien was reportedly on her way to drop off Kori, then chaperone the prom.

Prosecutors say Pedemonte, who was 19 at the time of the crash, was driving more than 100 miles per hour in a rental car when he struck O'Brien's vehicle.
