The student accused of bringing the gun to school is facing disciplinary action and criminal charges.

DECATUR, GA β€” A student is facing disciplinary actions and criminal charges after a gun went off in a Miller Grove Middle School classroom Tuesday.

School Principal Sharon Evans sent a letter home to parents Tuesday detailing the incident. Patch received a copy of the letter Wednesday.

School staff were alerted to the incident after a small popping noise was heard during a class bathroom break. The sound came from a weapon that was discharged in the classroom, Evans said in the letter.

promptly," Evans said in the letter. " ... I encourage families to use this incident as an example of the importance of our 'See Something, Say Something' campaign by telling a parent or staff member any time they suspect there may be an unsafe situation at school."
