Tucker Restaurant Owner Killed For Car Loan Cash: Police

A man and a woman are charged with the murder of Somphot "Joey" Aromsuk, owner of Tucker's Mai Thai restaurant.

DECATUR, GA — The owner of Tucker's popular Mai Thai restaurant was shot and killed because of his employees needed money for her car loan.

That's according to testimony on Wednesday from a DeKalb County homicide detective, reports the AJC. Lynn Shuler said during a preliminary hearing that Somphot “Joey” Aromsuk, 33, was killed by Imani Burns, 20, and her boyfriend, Jarvis Stanford, 23, on Sept. 10.

Shuler said Burns, a waitress at the restaurant, had asked Aromsuk to work some extra shifts to help with her TitleMax car loan. Aromsuk agreed, but Shuler said Burns became upset when Aromsuk refused her request to pay her in advance.

The detective said the couple then planned to rob Aromsuk. After smoking pot in the restaurant's High Howell Road parking lot, Shuler said Stanford approached Aromsuk with a gun and demanded money. Aromsuk refused, and Shuler said Stanford shot the victim twice and robbed him of $800.

Both suspects are charged with murder.
