Pot Smokers Robbed at Decatur Cemetery

Other Decatur Police reports from the past week include the arrest of a carjacking suspect and a residential car break-in.

DECATUR, GA -- Four teens who went to Decatur Cemetery to smoke pot were robbed at gunpoint there last week, police say.

On Monday, May 30, at about 9:45 p.m., Decatur Police responded to an armed robbery call at the cemetery.

They met the caller, who said he and three friends, all of them younger than 18, had gone to the cemetery to smoke marijuana when they met two males and two female teens he said they recognized from school.

All eight of the teens hung out and smoked pot for about thirty minutes. The two girls left, then the two males who were with them left a short time later.

But, about two minutes later, they returned. After briefly hanging out near some shrubs, one of them ran toward the group brandishing a firearm and yelling for them to give up all their belongings, saying he would shoot them if they didn't.

The four victims gave up all of their property. The robbers too, four cellphones, two wallets, a backpack, two sets of keys, cash, two bicycle locks and a set of bicycle lights.

The victims ran to Glenlake Park and called 911. Officers recovered one of the wallets on the ground near the cemetery exit on Commerce Drive.

Police say further investigation revealed the identities of both suspect and warrants were obtained.

On Wednesday, June 1, Kobie Maddox, 16, of Decatur, was arrested on warrants for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault and armed robbery.

On Monday, Jaiquon Johnson, 17, of Decatur was arrested on a warrant for armed robbery.

Other recent incidents reported by Decatur Police include:

  • On Friday at about 10:28 p.m., a Decatur Police officer was on patrol when the patrol vehicle's automatic license plate reader alerted that a passing car was reported stolen. The officer confirmed the maroon Chrysler Town & Country was stolen -- in an Atlanta carjacking. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop. On the 1000 block of Atlanta Avenue, the driver stopped in a commercial parking lot and he and a passenger ran. Other officers arrived and the two suspects, who fit the description of the Atlanta carjackers, were captured. A black "Airsoft" handgun consistent with one used in the carjacking, was found in the car. The driver, Kaila Glenn, 20, of Lithonia, was charged with theft by receiving stolen property, eluding police and obstruction of an officer. The passenger, TiAsia Smith, 18, of Ohio, was charged with theft by receiving stolen property and obstruction of an officer.
  • At 6 a.m. Saturday, an officer responded to a call of entering-auto on Village Court. The homeowner said he went to check on a noise and saw a woman rummaging through his vehicle. The suspect was holding a screwdriver and his garage door opener. She handed him the garage opener and left the area, with an unknown amount of cash taken from the vehicle. The homeowner gave a detailed description to police and an officer located a suspect at the intersection of Sycamore Street and Hillyer Place, carrying a screwdriver and black bag. The victim IDed the woman as the person he saw in his car. The bag the woman was carrying contained a laptop and four cellphones. Keiera Hudson, 25, of DeKalb County, was charged with entering auto and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.
