Snow In South Georgia? Here's The Proof (Photos)

Savannah and the rest of coastal south Georgia got more snow Wednesday than the area has seen in nearly 20 years.

SAVANNAH, GA — A swath of south Georgia, including its generally snow-averse coastal region, were blanketed with the most snow many residents can remember on Wednesday.

Schools and businesses remained closed Thursday, after Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for 28 counties from Screven County down to the Florida state line. As public safety officials were warning residents to stay off of the highways, many folks were enjoying rare snow days in the Coastal Empire.

On Wednesday, the Savannah area got as much as four inches of snow in some areas, the Savannah Morning News reported.

Bridges and some roads in the area remained closed on Thursday morning, though authorities reported few major weather-related incidents.

So, how rare is this snow?

The last recorded snowfall in Savannah was in February 1996, when the area received two-tenths of an inch. The last time there was a snow accumulation to rival Wednesday's was all the way back in 1989, when 3.6 inches fell.

Here's a look at how some south Georgia resident reacted to the rare snowfall:

Historic downtown Savannah is lovely at the worst of times. Add a blanket of snow and you get some truly captivating images. Photographer Randy Thompson caught a few, including these looks at the Tomochichi monument in Wright Square, the 300-year-old Candler Oak near Forsyth Park and some pickup-truck snowboarding near Columbia Square. Snow may be rare, but some folks were still thinking about something else that hasn't happened since the 1980s — a college football National Championship for the Georgia Bulldogs. In Savannah, one household got a visit from "Snowquan Smith" — who bears a striking similarity to star UGA linebacker Roquan Smith with his No. 3 and spiked turnover shoulder pads. It wasn't all fun and games, though. Here's a look at what Interstate 95 and Interstate 16 in south Georgia looked like on Wednesday. (Photos courtesy Georgia Department of Transportation)
