Georgia Tax-Free Weekend 2016: Dates, Items Included, More Details

The governor's office says the two-day holiday will save Georgians up to $74.5 million.

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia's statewide back-to-school tax-free holiday weekend will take place this Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31.

The Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget estimates the two-day holiday will save Georgians up to $74.5 million. Under state law, the holiday starts at midnight Friday and will conclude at midnight on July 31. Some of the exempt items include:

  • Clothing (including footwear) with a sales price of $100 or less per item
  • Computers, computer components and prewritten software purchased for noncommercial home or personal use with a sales price of $1,000 or less per item
  • School supplies purchased for noncommercial use with a sales price of $20 or less per item

Of the 45 states that collect sales tax, Consumer Reports said 17 have a sales tax holiday for back-to-school purchases.

According to the publication, the average family plans to spend more than $900 per child on back-to-school shopping this year.

State sales tax holidays usually last for two to three days, although Maryland lifts its 6 percent sales tax for an entire week in August.

Tennessee's back-to-school sales tax holiday also starts Friday, overlapping Georgia's. The Times Free Press said the Volunteer state's tax holiday used to run the first week of August, but was changed this year because school is starting sooner.
