2 Escape from Late-Night Fire Near Duluth

The fire is believed to be accidental, resulting from a fire burning in the fireplace.

Two adults escaped unharmed from a late-night house fire near Duluth that started in the fireplace.

The adults were awakened by a popping sound, found the fire and called 911 Monday shortly before midnight, Gwinnett Fire said in a news release.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said crews arrived at the residence on Mockingbird Circle at midnight and found flames burning in the attic and chimney areas. The fire spread from the fireplace and sent smoke throughout the house.

The fire, which caused moderate damage, was brought under control by 12:26 p.m., Rutledge said.

The fire is believed to be accidental, resulting from a fire burning in the fireplace. The residents were using the fireplace before going to bed.
