Bites Nearby: Poona Indian Restaurant

An Indian restaurant serving traditional dishes across from Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth.

This week's Bites Nearby features one of the few Indian restaurants to be found in Duluth.

Poona seeks to evoke India in its decor, sumptuous in red and gold, and in its Mughlai dining choices. Mughlai cuisine, the most common Indian food served in restaurants in the United States, is something of a fusion cuisine incorporating strong Persian and Turkic influences. Birthed in the Mughal empire which ruled most of the Indian subcontinent from the 16th to the 18th century, Mughlai food is still popular and traditional in northern India and Pakistan to this day. Well-known elements include yogurt-based sauces, chilies, kebabs, the flatbread known as naan, and of course, curry spices. Poona's food is reputed to be not quite as spicy as most, which may be attractive to some diners who are turned off by the heavy spice in Indian food. Many vegetarian and vegan options are available. Poona serves a lunch buffet as well as dinner a la carte. Located at 3820 Pleasant Hill Road, Duluth, GA 30096. 770-232-1234. Open Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday, noon-10 p.m. Most entrees are from $8-$15. Check out a full menu on their website
