Unconditional Love: Pet Therapy
Pet therapy has been proven to produce a long list of psychological benefits -- it's clear that fuzzy friends can make a difference.

Pets have long been recognized for their unique ability to offer comfort and companionship in times of stress, but many studies have shown that the benefits of interacting with a loving animal are far greater than one might expect.
Pet therapy has been proven to produce a long list of psychological benefits -- it’s clear that fuzzy friends can make a difference. Studies suggest that levels of oxytocin, a mood-affecting neurotransmitter and 'feel-good' hormone in the brain, increase by simply petting a dog. Other benefits of pet therapy include:
- Increased social interactions with other residents and pet handlers.
- Increased mobility from brushing, petting and walking an animal.
- Lower blood pressure by the gentle nature of the non-judgmental relationship.
- Improved self-esteem as seniors find the animal enjoys seeing them monthly.
- Decreased depression, anxiety and loneliness by caring for and spending time with an animal.
Recently a Mayo Clinic oncologist, Edward Creagan, said, “A pet is a medication without side effects that has so many benefits.”

We are so grateful that every month, Larry and Ginger Hiller bring Java and Bogee to Plantation South Duluth to provide affection and unconditional love in this unique form of therapy to the senior residents. The program has been especially effective for residents suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Seniors are at a higher risk of experiencing depression as they become less independent. Visiting with pets is an easy and enjoyable way for them to be social, reduce stress and feel better about themselves.
