Born in Dallas and raised in the soaking humid Piney Woods of east Texas,&nbsp;Michelle Shocked&nbsp;grew up in a large fundamentalist Mormon family before leaving home at sixteen. She put herself through the University of Texas at Austin, earning a degree in Oral Interpretation of Literature while becoming increasingly involved in political activism.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Before she was a celebrated recording artist,&nbsp;Shocked&nbsp;was a fixture of the American punk underground. Flying a mohawk and a safety pin for a nose ring, while busking on the streets with her mandolin and fiddle, she sprang, fully-formed, from the San Francisco hardcore scene. She was arrested in 1984 at the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco and&nbsp;again&nbsp;at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, and the iconic&nbsp;San Francisco Examiner&nbsp;photo of her arrest, in a police chokehold, subsequently became the cover image of her debut studio album,&nbsp;Short Sharp&nbsp;Shocked.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;“You can be poor anywhere,” she figured, making her way to Paris to join the resistance against Reagan’s Cold War provocations: squatting in Amsterdam while working with a pirate radio collective, joining fellow pirate radio activists in Madrid to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Franco’s death, enlisting at a women’s peace camp in Sicily, vagabonding Europe—from Finland to Morocco—on a counterfeit rail pass poached in Brixton, and survived on the remnants of the Old Left’s mutual aid network. Music was never the plan. Activism was.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;That unlikely journey would eventually produce one of the most unconventional careers in contemporary American music—one that has continually crossed the boundaries between folk, blues, swing, gospel, politics, faith, and storytelling while remaining defiantly independent at every turn. The Unlawful Assembly reimagines and tributes historic spirituals and hymns which universally inspire, empower and unite. Leader/guitarist/singer Walter Parks, longtime sideman to Woodstock legend Richie Havens, is joined by featured artists drummer/producer Steven Williams, Ada Dyer on vocals who’s currently touring worldwide with Bruce Springsteen and/or Andrae Murchison on trombone.
In one live-concert experience The Unlawful Assembly entertains and informs while successfully melding roots music of divergent origins. The soundtrack to American black history – old-school spirituals, gospel, blues, and prison work chants intertwine with swamp hollers, shaped-note hymns and Appalachian reels of white homesteader origin.
Parks’ native northeast Florida swampy feel borrows from southern rock, jazz, early 70’s soul and few gospel interpretations that rest joyfully upon a foundation of modern electronic loops.
Reimagined covers and traditionals include: “Wade In The Water”, “Follow The Drinking Gourd”, “Down By The Riverside”, “Steal Away”, “Old Blind Barnabas”, “Amazing Grace”, “Higher Ground” and “Early In The Mornin’”. Walter contributes “Georgia Rice” and a co-write with Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers on “Shoulder It”.&nbsp;

“Mama Jan” Smith is a nationally recognized singer/songwriter/musician, Jan&nbsp;Smith&nbsp;is also a&nbsp;Grammy&nbsp;recognized&nbsp;producer, GA Music Hall of Fame inductee, and a&nbsp;multi-platinum certified vocal coach/vocal producer who has tended to some of the most distinctive voices in the business.&nbsp;With over 40 years of performance acumen, her natural stage banter and vocal prowess remain her mark of excellence as a mentor and performer.&nbsp;

Heidi Huelskoetter is a seasoned singer-songwriter with deep roots in the Nashville music scene. As a former signed artist and writer at PolyGram Publishing and Radney Foster, Heidi spent six years honing her craft among some of the industry’s finest. Heidi’s music blends Americana, and Country storytelling, creating songs that are melodically moving and lyrically deeply personal. In addition to her songwriting career, Heidi has dedicated 30 years as a&nbsp;<a href="https://jansmith.com/heidi-huelskoetter/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Master Vocal Coach</a>&nbsp;at Jan Smith Studios in Atlanta, GA, mentoring vocalists and songwriters across all genres. This dual role as both artist and mentor reflects her unwavering commitment to the transformative power of music.

Janelle Arthur got her start at eight years old portraying a young Dolly Parton in the production of "Paradise Road". She went on to perform over 5,000 shows in the Pigeon Forge area before moving to Nashville, TN to pursue her love of songwriting. Janelle landed in the top five on American Idol, has performed at the Grand Ole Opry over 25 times and has duets with Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, The Isaacs and more. Arthur is a multi-dimensional artist as she has also starred in two Feature Films, "' From My Roots" and romantic comedy "Five Date Rule".&nbsp;

Erin Kirby is a Georgia-born country artist whose unmistakable voice and heartfelt songwriting have earned her performances on stages from the Grand Ole Opry to SXSW. Since signing as a songwriter to Concord, she is steadily carving out her place in the modern country landscape. After early national exposure on Lifetime’s Kim of Queens, Kirby transitioned from her pop and R&amp;B beginnings into a signature style she describes as “Adele Country” - a blend of raw soul, emotional power, and southern authenticity. Her 2026 debut EP introduced her as a compelling new voice, and she followed it with the motivational ballad “Darkness Win,” a track that showcases both her vocal range and her ability to write with vulnerability and hope.&nbsp;
