Duluth Man Killed in Apartment Fire

Fire officials do not suspect foul play in the deadly blaze.

DULUTH, GA -- A Duluth man was killed Tuesday when fire struck the apartment where he lived, fire officials said.

Arson is not suspected in the blaze, which caused moderate damage to The Falls apartments on the 1500 block of The Falls Parkway.

Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services described the victim as an adult male in his 20’s who lived in the apartment where the fire appears to have started. He is not being publicly identified, pending notification of next of kin, officials said in a news release.

Two other occupants, an adult female and a child, were not home at the time of the fire, which was reported at 2:31 p.m. No other injuries were reported.

The body of the victim has been turned over to Gwinnett County’s medical examiner to determine exact cause of death.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the single, second-floor unit where it started and it was under control by 2:54 p.m.

Gwinnett Police were first on the scene and an officer kicked in a door trying to enter the building but was unable to do so because of heat and smoke, the news release said.

The Red Cross was contacted to provide temporary housing for the occupants of a neighboring apartment.
