Hello, neighbors! It's me again, Lyndsay Kendall Oxley, your host of the Duluth Daily.

First, today's weather:

Showers around; not as warm. High: 68 Low: 48.

Here are the top stories today in Duluth:

  1. Last week, a Gwinnett Superior Court judge ruled that local school officials can require students to wear masks. The ruling says that the school district has sovereign immunity from the parents' lawsuit that was filed at the beginning of the school year. The Georgia Constitution gives county-wide school districts sovereign immunity from legal claims and injunctions that do not have an official waiver. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  2. A Republican Gwinnett legislator has surprised Gwinnett Democrats by calling for big changes to our local government. The legislator introduced two bills on Tuesday during the state Legislature's special session that would dramatically shift the structure of the local boards. If the proposed changes are approved, local voters in Gwinnett County would elect one chairperson and nine county commissioners. Right now, our county only has four commissioners. There would still be five school board members, but their election districts would change. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  3. A fire that happened Tuesday in a clothing store caused the evacuation of the the Mall of Georgia. The situation remains under investigation by local authorities. The fire started on a single clothes rack of Rue 21, and there has been no source identified. (11 Alive)
  4. According to the principal of Benefield Elementary, first-grade teacher Alexandra Morales is reported missing from her recent trip to Mexico. Morales' family had notified the school that police are investigating her disappearance from her last known location near Guadalajara, Mexico. A substitute teacher has been put in place with support of the other first grade teachers. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  5. A late veteran named Scott Hudgens who was a former resident of Duluth has been inducted into the Georgia Military Veterans' Hall of Fame. He was a Technician Fifth Grade in the Army, commercial realtor, developer of malls across Georgia and philanthropist. Hudgens served in the European Theater, landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day, fought in several political campaigns, was wounded and he received the Purple Heart, among other awards.
