Here are the top three stories in Duluth today:
- A gunman was taken into custody after a standoff with Gwinnett County SWAT yesterday morning. According to the police, the man barricaded himself inside a Greyhound bus on I-85 around 9:30 a.m. The SWAT response shut down the highway between Indian Trail and Beaver Ruin roads for hours. (WSB Atlanta)
- Gwinnett County Public Schools is participating in "Learning 2025: Student-Centered, Equity-Focused Education," a three-year initiative aimed at improving the nation's education system. GCPS would be one of 121 select school districts from across the country to collaborate and develop ideas for improving the education system. Residents criticized and questioned the need for the program at a recent school board meeting, while Superintendent Calvin Watts defended the program stating that change is long overdue. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to donate to the GoFundMe account of a Gwinnett County deputy's wife fighting Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Danielle Strickland had to step away from her job as a teacher to undergo chemotherapy treatments. $13,000 of the $15,000 goal, which will cover medical expenses and relieve the financial stress, has already been raised.
