Gwinnett SWAT Team Called To Odd Standoff in Duluth

The suspect called 911 and reported that he had just robbed a convenience store, police say.

DULUTH, GA — The Gwinnett County Police SWAT team was activated early Thursday morning for a strange Duluth standoff in which they say the suspect reported himself to police for robbing a convenience store.

Obafemi Temitope Jaji, 29, of Duluth, was taken into custody at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday and treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

According to police, Jaji called 911 at about 12:30 a.m., saying that he had just robbed a local convenience store.

When uniformed officers arrived at his home, he asked to speak to a negotiator. But once the negotiator began speaking with him, he cut off communication.

At one point, police say, Jaji told officers they would have to kill him to take him into custody.

While negotiations were in progress, an officer went to the convenience store and confirmed that they had been robbed. No one at the store had called 911.

The SWAT team was activated at about 3 a.m., as officers continued trying to negotiate with Jaji.

At some point, the team breached the door to Jaji's apartment and could see that he had a firearm in his hand, authorities say.

At around 8:30 a.m., Jaji was taken into custody and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, before being transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.

He faces one count of robbery by intimidation and one count of theft by taking.

Once he's released from the hospital, he'll be transported to Gwinnett County Jail.

"It’s unclear what his motivations were in robbing the store, calling 911, or trying to get the officers to come to his home," Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a news release.
