Motorcyclist Killed in Duluth Wreck

Andrew Carson, 20, may have been speeding when he hit a Nissan Altima on Thursday, Gwinnett police said.

DULUTH, GA -- A motorcyclist was killed Thursday in a collision in which he slammed into a car at an intersection in Duluth, police said.

Andrew Carson, 20, of Duluth, was traveling westbound on Duluth Highway at Meadow Church Road shortly before 4 p.m. when Gwinnett County Police say he struck a Nissan Altima being driven by Raul Rojas, 43, also of Duluth.

Police say Rojas was traveling eastbound and preparing to turn left onto Meadow Church Road. He told police that he had begun his turn when Carson approached "at a high rate of speed" and hit the side of the Altima.

Both vehicles came to "an uncontrolled rest" in the southbound lanes of Meadow Church Road, police said.

Police and fire crews arrived and determined that Carson was suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, but died as a result of those injuries.

Gwinnett Police say Carson's speed may have been a contributing factor to the collision. They did not disclose how fast he appeared to have been going, but the posted speed limit in the area is 45 m.p.h.

Rojas also was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with serious injuries. Carson was wearing a helmet and Rojas was using his seatbelt.
