Here are the top stories in Duluth today:
- For local nonprofits, the need for more supplies and community support is growing as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Southeast Gwinnett Co-op Ministry has seen record numbers of people visiting its facility looking for food and shelter. However, Habitat Gwinnett has seen its usual donations coming through with 90% of the payments coming through every month. With these great needs, the non-profit organizations are saying that there are lessons to be learned, and conversations to be had to advance our society in the right direction. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- Miss Gwinnett was crowned Wednesday night at the Gwinnett County Fair! Her name is Chyann Hoyle, and she also was awarded with a $1,500 scholarship. Way to go Miss Gwinnett! (Gwinnettdailypost.com)This article is behind a paywall.
- Gwinnett County leaders are currently planning a nearly 60 year long project to transform around 2,000 acres of Gwinnett into metro Atlanta's new hub for jobs and research. A non-profit company named The Rowen Foundation that focuses on agriculture, medicine, and environment will be taking over a majority of this area creating around 80,000-100,000 jobs within the century. The location for this will be on the boarder of highway 316 and Barrow County. Taking into account the natural beauty of the area, there will be a town center and multi-family housing options. (AJC)
- A local man who was beaten by Gwinnett officers in 2017 is now suing the former Gwinnett County police. He announced the lawsuit after two officers were kicking his head while he was handcuffed at a traffic stop. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- Our local Georgia Gwinnett College has been recognized as a Tree Campus by the Arbor Day Foundation for their third consecutive year. This program honors schools for taking care of the trees that are on campus, and for making their best efforts in combatting climate change. (Press Release Desk )
