UPDATE: DeKalb Redistricting Plan Approved By School Board

A redistricting plan to address overcrowding in DeKalb schools like Dunwoody was approved Monday by the school board.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A DeKalb County redistricting plan was approved Monday by the school board. The Interim Redistricting Plan (IRP) will help alleviate the overcrowding issue for schools in the district.

On Jan. 13, Interim School Superintendent Ramona Tyson presented the first read of the plan. According to the district, the plan emphasized the need for a Comprehensive Redistricting Plan (CMP) before any major redistricting could be done. This would alleviate moving families multiple times, they said.

In a statement to Patch, the district said the plan calls for 102 students to move out of Dunwoody Elementary School to Austin Elementary School in August 2020. Neither school will utilize portable classrooms after the move.

The plan calls for Kittredge Magnet School to move from the Nancy Creek facility to the former John Lewis facility, beginning the 2020-2021 school year. The Nancy Creek facility will temporarily bring in fourth and fifth grade students from Dunwoody Elementary School for a three-year period. During that time, a new land/new school or existing land/new school will be built with a target opening date of 2023.

The plan includes a total review of overcrowded schools, under-utilized schools, feeder patterns, school consolidations, instructional programming, new construction, renovations, and more.

The new attendance areas would go into effect July 1.
