The toddler was shot Monday morning and died from the injuries. Relatives face drug and evidence tampering charges in the incident.

The investigation into the shooting death of a toddler in the 700 block of Third Street in Stone Mountain continues, authorities say, and charges have been filed against the slain child’s aunt and uncle.

According to police, Alexia Thomas, 23, and Detray Shiver, 25, were charged Monday with child cruelty, reckless conduct and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, reports WTTG TV.

Shiver is also charged with tampering with evidence.

“The child was reportedly discovered by a family member, deceased from an apparent gun shot wound,” Captain Stephen Fore with DeKalb County Police told the TV station.

Initially police thought the 3-year-old may have been a self-inflicted wound, but detectives believe a gun found inside a storm drain in front of the home was used in the incident, WTTG says.
