A 6-year-old boy was flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston this morning after being struck by a van at an East Cobb intersection.

Cobb police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce told Patch that the boy, his mother and their family dog were taking their regular morning walk near the intersection of Casteel Road and Sumter Lake Drive when the accident happened.

"The boy was about six steps ahead of his mother when he stepped in the path of an oncoming van," Pierce said. "He was thrown quite a long distance away from the impact point."
