Tritt's Exceptional Day; Wheeler Renovation Meeting; East Cobb Cultural Summitt; The Wiz at Walton

Rounding up East Cobb school news of note.

1. At Tritt Elementary School's Exceptional Children's Week last week, students learned from young people who are living with disabilities and from experts on the subject. 

One of those was Tritt student Haley Metzger, who talked about living with cerebral palsy and the book she wrote to share her experiences with others. 

Erin Hoffman, a young woman with Down's Syndrome and is traveling to Greece this summer for the Special Olympics World Games

The Tritt PTA raised money for the Autism Society by selling t-shirts designed and signed by Daniel, an autistic teenager who loves to draw. His shirts can be found at b-who-u-r.com.  

2. Wheeler High School's upcoming renovation plans will be discussed at a forum starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The meeting will take place in the school auditorium and will include more detailed plans from Cobb schools SPLOST chief Doug Shepard on the $20 million project, which will begin this spring and take three years to complete.

3. Wheeler also will be the venue on Monday for the East Cobb County Council of PTA's East Cobb Cultural Summit. The meeting, which takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium, will cover a range of issues related to the variety of cultures and faiths in East Cobb in a panel discussion format. 

4. Tickets are on sale for the Walton High School Drama Club's presentation of "The Wiz" March 24-26. Performances are 7 p.m. each day, with a 2 p.m. matinee Saturday, March 26. All shows are at the Walton Theater, with ticket prices ranging from $8 for students to $10 for adults. For information call the school at 770-578-3225.

5. Timber Ridge Elementary School was among the 10 schools that recently participated in Cobb EMC's Career Day. Participating students were “hired” for the day and paired with Cobb EMC employees who taught them about their jobs and allowed them to assist with certain projects.

Timber Ridge student Peyton Allen was paired with Cobb EMC's Kembrya Smith, as the 50 students participating learned not only about different careers but what it's like to work in a large operation. 

Timber Ridge is one of 10 Cobb schools that's part of Cobb EMC's partnership program, along with Dodgen Middle School.
