Volunteer Attacked at Cobb Animal Shelter

The volunteer wants the county to help pay her medical bills.

A recent college graduate is upset with Cobb County after she says she was attacked by a dog in the county animal shelter while doing volunteer work and was not compensated for her medical bills.

Susan Shoaf told WSB-TV she was attacked by a chow mix in March and needed stitches to close the bite wounds she received. Shoaf had to get rabies vaccines after shelter employees were unable to tell her whether the dog that attacked her had the disease, WSB-TV reports.

Shoaf says she owes $16,000 in medical bills, but Cobb County won’t cover the costs; the county won’t comment on the matter officially but Shoaf says she’s been told the county has sovereign immunity in this instance and cannot be sued.
