A Victorian Halloween: Creatures & Myths

This talk explores the strange world of monsters and supernatural creatures in Victorian Britain. From the terrifying Spring-Heeled Jack prowling the streets of London to photographs of fairies and stories of an ancient Egyptian mummy whose curse supposedly brought disaster to anyone who encountered it, Victorians loved a good supernatural story. We’ll look at some of the most famous cases, where the stories came from, and what they can tell us about a society fascinated by both the possibilities of the modern world and the things that science still could not explain.
