Alfie Meek, Candidate for Gwinnett County Commissioner - District 4, to Host Volunteer Kick-Off Event

Volunteer Event to Take Place Thursday Eve, January 30th

Gwinnett County’s former Economist, Alfie Meek, is now seeking the 2014 Republican nomination so that he may run in November for the opportunity to serve as the next District 4 County Commissioner. After officially kicking off his campaign a few weeks ago, Alfie will be hosting a volunteer recruiting event on Thursday evening.

“I appreciate that a victorious campaign takes a tremendous amount of help and I truly want to reach out to as many constituents who, like me, seek honesty, transparency and fairness for Gwinnett County. I am hopeful for a plenteous and effective volunteer team, and I look forward to meeting as many new folks as humanly possible,” explains Alfie.

“Yard signs, meet and greets, phone calls, writing post cards, and knocking on doors are just a few of the ways that volunteer team members can help the campaign,” continues Alfie.

The Volunteer Kick-Off Event will be held Thursday, January 30th at The Overlook Apartment Homes Club House at Gwinnett Stadium (1600 Overlook Park Lane – Lawrenceville, GA 30043). The meeting will run from 7:00pm-8:30pm and light appetizers will be served.

About Alfie
Alfie started his career as an analyst at IBM in the late 1980s, and then worked for SunTrust Banks as a research economist before joining the research faculty of Georgia Tech in the mid-1990s.  He was on the public service faculty of the University of Georgia before he joined employ as Gwinnett County’s Economist in 2002. In 2011, Alfie returned to the faculty of Georgia Tech to lead the Community Innovation Services group, which provides economic and fiscal analysis and research to communities across Georgia.

As Gwinnett County’s Director of Economic Development, Alfie was vital in attracting companies like NCR, Hewlett-Packard, Suniva and Advanced Micro Devices.

Alfie was a member of 2006-07 Leadership Gwinnett.  He is a past president of the Atlanta Economics Club, and a member of the National Association of Business Economics, the Georgia Economic Developers Association, and the International Economic Development Council.  He is also on the Board of the Georgia Academy for Economic Development, and is the in-coming 2014-15 Chairman of the Community Developers Forum.

Alfie grew up in Tucker, GA and graduated from Stone Mountain Christian School.  He attended Georgia Tech, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.  He earned a Master of Science degree in Business Economics from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Georgia.

Alfie has been married to his high school sweetheart, Pilar for 21 years and they have two sons, Aidan and Garrett who attend Hebron Christian Academy. They are members of North Metro First Baptist Church, where Alfie teaches an adult Sunday school class.  When he is not working, Alfie is very involved in the Boy Scouts of America where he serves as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 514 in Lawrenceville.
