Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Metro judge wants $190K to help truant students before they end up in criminal system (wsbtv.com) — Gwinnett County's chief juvenile court judge is asking for about $190,000 in the 2027 budget to fund a coordinator and services for students who repeatedly miss school, hoping to intervene before problems become criminal cases. The court, which already runs a weekly truancy session, is also seeking $1.1 million to make two associate judges full-time, a request county commissioners will weigh next month.
2. Armed home invasion suspects beat parents near baby, police say (wsbtv.com) — Gwinnett County police have arrested the alleged lookout in a violent July home invasion near Norcross, where suspects broke in with an AR-style rifle and beat two parents while a baby was inside. Four of the five named suspects are now in custody, with detectives recovering suspected stolen property in Cobb County and continuing to search for at least one more person.
3. Smoothie King in Lawrenceville receives a 61% on their recent health inspection (thegeorgiagazette.com) — A Lawrenceville Smoothie King on Sugarloaf Parkway scored just 61 on a recent Gwinnett County health inspection, triggering a mandatory follow-up within 10 days and a possible permit suspension. Inspectors cited issues like unsafe food temperatures, mold-like growth in ingredients and the ice machine, expired cheeses, and equipment problems, and ordered some foods discarded and the cooler taken out of service until repaired.
4. Gwinnett County awarded $750K federal grant to help fight elder abuse (wsbradio.com) — Gwinnett County has secured a $750,000 federal grant to expand education and training aimed at preventing elder abuse and exploitation locally. Solicitor-General Lisa-Marie Bristol says the money will fund awareness programs for seniors and specialized training for first responders, helping them better spot signs of abuse and guide older residents toward safer choices as scams and technology-based crimes evolve.
5. Georgia court rejects RNC bid to restrict mail ballot return access in state's second-largest county (democracydocket.com) — A Gwinnett County judge has upheld the county's policy allowing voters to return absentee ballots at designated early voting sites, even when those locations lack drop boxes. The ruling rejects a Republican lawsuit and confirms that trained election officials at certain Gwinnett polling places can accept hand-delivered mail ballots, preserving a convenient option for local voters ahead of November's election.
