The city on Friday said it has issued building permits for three of the 10 billboards that will be constructed within its municipal boundaries. A fourth application for a billboard building permit is expected to be received soon.

So, how did we get to the point where several billboards will become part of the city’s landscape?

Before Johns Creek incorporated, several billboard companies applied to Fulton County for a total of 75 billboard sign permits.

The county denied those applications, which propelled the companies to sue. After it became a city, Johns Creek joined the lawsuit.

The lawsuit was resolved by the Georgia Supreme Court, which ruled the county’s sign ordinance was unconstitutional and the companies were entitled to erect up to 75 billboards, including 31 billboards at 27 locations within Johns Creek.

In order to lessen the blow of 31 billboards, Johns Creek negotiated an agreement with the companies to erect only 10 billboards in 10 locations. Johns Creek has issued those three permits to comply with the agreement.

How tall will they be?

The three permitted billboards will be between 60 and 85 feet tall. The remaining billboards could range from 60 to 95 feet.

What will the billboard’s look like?

The first billboard will be static and the next two will be LED. The remaining seven billboards will be LED.

Where will billboards be erected?

The city has received building permit applications for:

  • 8465 Holcomb Bridge Road
  • 11701 Fox Road
  • 8455 Holcomb Bridge Road
  • As part of one company’s application with the state, Johns Creek has certified that a fourth location, 6375 McGinnis Ferry Road, complies with the court order.

Where are the other six locations should all 10 locations be filled?

The remaining six locations include:

  • West side of State Bridge Road from Kimball Bridge to Morton
  • East side of State Bridge Road from Kimball Bridge to Morton
  • State Bridge Road near Ga. 141/Medlock Bridge Road
  • Ga. 141/Medlock Bridge at State Bridge Road
  • Ga. 141/Medlock Bridge Road at Abbotts Bridge Road
  • Jones Bridge Road at Abbotts Bridge Road

When will they be built?

The first billboard is anticipated to begin construction during the week of Sept. 14.

Why so many?

The court order allowed the billboard companies to erect 31 signs in 27 locations. Johns Creek was permitted to negotiate this number down to 10 signs in 10 locations, many on the fringes of the city.
