Billy Joel Tribute Band To Perform in Johns Creek

The Billy Joel tribute band, The Stranger, will perform a long string of hits by the Piano Man at the Aug. 22 concert at Newtown Park Amphitheater in Johns Creek.

Featuring native Long Islander Mike Santoro, The Stranger has played at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the Fillmore in Charlotte, N.C., and several House of Blues venues.

The band, formed in 2009, was named after one of Billy Joel’s most famous albums and hit songs.

“Mike Santoro is well-known for his right-on impersonation of Billy Joel,” said Kirk Franz, recreation manager. “The Stranger came highly recommended, and we think they’ll give people a true Billy Joel experience.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. The music starts at 7 p.m. with a performance by The School of Rock in Johns Creek. The Stranger kicks off at 8 p.m. and finishes at 9:30 p.m.

The 2015 Amphitheater concert series, which has free admission, features tribute bands and acts that harken to the rock’ n’ roll 1980s and 1990s.

The series closes Saturday, Sept. 19, with the popular ‘90s band, Drivin N Cryin, whose album “Fly Me Courageous” album went gold. The Atlanta-based group has toured with Neil Young and Soul Asylum, and has remained well-loved in the Southeast.

Food trucks (Gotta Have It, Happy Belly, King of Pops) will be returning to the venue as well as Hurricane Grill, who will sell beverages.

To allow for more dance space, the rows of chairs under the amphitheater will be replaced with round tables that can be reserved by calling 678-512-3200 (tables for Drivin N Cryin are sold out.)

If you don’t have a table, you can bring bring a picnic, lawn chair or blanket and relax on the terraced lawn. No alcohol, please, although beer and wine are for sale.

The Amphitheater is located at Newtown Park at 3150 Old Alabama Road in Johns Creek.
