Travel Agents: To Use or Not to Use

Today the choices are vast when it comes to using a travel agent or relying on the internet for the best deals.

I will let you know that using a travel agent is a better choice when it comes to spending your vacation money wisely. A travel agent is your advocate before, during and after your vacation. This only applies to a good travel agent. Anyone planning a trip can go online and look at the big name travel websites, but the real question is, will you actually get the best deal?

An online agency is just that. They are not your advocate, your friend or looking out for your best interests. In most cases they are simply a call and booking center, not your personal agent.

I am in the industry for the love of travel. I make sure that my clients receive the best I have to offer for each individual client. Knowing the destinations is my specialty when it comes to assisting passengers who want to book excursions. It is this expertise that you want in your travel agent.

Asking the right questions is key to making your money work for you. If you find the agent not willing to answer any questions for you, find another agent quickly.

Here are some things to ask before you book with a "good" travel agent:

  1. Have you been to this destination?
  2. What is your affiliation with this cruise line or tour company?
  3. Why are you recommending this company- do you earn additional commissions by recommending only these companies?
  4. What is the best time of year to travel for the most cost-effective vacation?
  5. Where will my U.S. currency get the most value?
  6. Are the taxes and fees included in the cruise fare quoted?
  7. Can I get any discounts if I am a past guest with the cruise line or tour company?
  8. What would you suggest for a vacation on a limited budget?
  9. What does peak, shoulder and off-season mean to the traveler?
  10. Will my deposit be refundable?

These are some of the key questions to ask before hiring a travel agent. My suggestion is to interview several and use recommendations from friends. Any good agent will be willing to answer all your questions. A really good agent will ask you questions in return.
