Do You Like Your Job…But Not Your Company?

Do you like your job…but not your company? Perhaps you need to change your company OR change your perspective.

Perhaps You Need to Change Your Company OR Change Your Perspective

What do you do if you enjoy your current career, but the organization you work for is no longer desirable?

Changing Companies

Although it may be a bit risky to change jobs in today’s employment climate, there may be circumstances that add stress and can make it unbearable, such as:

  • A lengthy commute and/or high gas prices
  • Insufficient pay/benefits
  • A lack of challenging work
  • Too few or no career advancement opportunities
  • Climate/values changes

If staying with your company doesn’t feel like an option, consider researching companies and organizations where you would like to work. Often positions are not posted on job boards or elsewhere publicly. Learn about them through networking—by finding people you know—or whom they know—who have connections to the companies you’re targeting.

There may be companies that you pass every day on the way to your office where
you’ve always dreamed of working. Who knows what’s going on behind the walls
and windows you pass every day? Now might be a good time to find out. Use your
network contacts to help you sneak a peek!

Changing Perspective

Another alternative might be to think about what your current company does provide for you:

  • What if the job is reasonably close to home?
  • Everyone would like to make more money, but what if the pay and benefits are okay?
  • What if there are work challenges at your current company or opportunities for advancement that you haven’t explored yet?
  • Even if your work isn’t all that challenging or stimulating, maybe it causes you less stress in your life and allows you more time to do the things you truly enjoy outside of work.
  • No one really likes change, but maybe climate or values changes could be positive in the long run.

Dr. Phil says, “You can make the right decision, or you can make the decision right.” Perhaps changing the way you think about your current job can make it more bearable and even make it desirable.

Whatever your reason(s) for considering an organization change may be, the decision should be a sensible one—not an emotional one. Start your job search while you’re still employed. Knowing that you have a job can help you put up with an unfortunate situation—especially as you learn that there are possibilities out there.
