I Receive

Do you unintentionally turn away gifts? Or are you open to receive?

Are you open to opportunity?

My current affirmation is “I openly and willingly receive from others.” My healing coach told me if somebody offers you a doughnut, you don’t have to eat it. Just say thank you. Show the universe you’re willing to receive. Sounds easy, but not for me. My instinct is to say no thanks, I already have (whatever it is) or that’s okay (I don’t need it).

Last week I was in Austin, TX at a music tradeshow. Tradeshows are a great place for handouts. The perfect place for me to practice my willingness. Coffee? (I don’t drink coffee) No thanks. Want a T-shirt? (I don’t wear T-shirts) No thanks. Free burrito? ( I don’t eat wheat) No thanks.

I think it only took 3 refusals before I got the gist of it. After that I graciously accepted a water bottle, a free pass to download music, a CD, a Large T-shirt (I’m a small), and several cards listing bands playing, then I managed to give it all away. As my coach said, it’s not about keeping, just receiving.

The heroine in my new novel is self-sufficient, organized, dependable, and independent. Those are great strengths. But she doesn’t like asking for help, which means she’s not always willing to receive. Can you imagine what will happen when she gets lost? Can’t fend for herself? Doesn’t  know who to turn to?

Life’s lessons affect everyone. My willingness to receive allows  other people to give. When my heroine learns the art of receiving, she’ll be a richer person.

What lessons are you working on? What lessons are your characters learning?
