Noises in the attic this time of the year?
If you are hearing noises in your attic this time of the year like scratching, scurrying and things that go "thump" in the morning you are likely to be the host of a Mother Squirrel.
It is that time of the year where our phones are ringing complaining about noises in the attic. I just received my first set of Grey Squirrel babies of the season which means the calls are only going to get more frequent.
When you hear noises in the attic during the day it is typically grey squirrels. We can even narrow it down a little further and I feel comfortable saying it is the female Grey Squirrel. They are the ones coming into the attics, away from predators and ill weather, to safely have their babies.
We get phone calls when the Moms move in and start making nests, then for a couple weeks the noise drops off while her babies are born and she is so attentive. Give it 6 - 8 weeks and the noises will sound like a circus has moved into your attic.

If you hire a trapping company, like ours, to professionally remove the squirrels during this time of the year just make sure the babies left behind are address. Prompt a conversation asking if the trapper checked the squirrel to see if she was nursing. If so, what options are there to remove the babies. Although I am the one who handles the rehabbing here, I am stating this for more reasons than just to 'save the babies'... it also is in your best interest due to the fact that if they are left up there to die then depending on the size (age) it could cause you to spend even more money to hire someone to remove the dead critters.
If the noises are during the evening hours then I would suspect eithers rats or flying squirrels since they are nocturnal.

My next blog will be about "How to hire a Trapper" and hopefully it will help guide you to making an educated decision about what person you hire to remove the wildlife and the questions to ask the trapper.
