Study Abroad - Yes or No?

Traveling Abroad, Yes or No? Teaching our children a new world enriches both their lives and those around them. What do you think?

As my husband and I celebrate the acceptance of our daughter into the Master's program at UGA (just had to say it out loud, jumping for joy for Jane!!) it brings to mind a question for all of you.

Do you think it's vital for our college students to study abroad?

I already know my answer. YES!!! Absolutely. What it brings to our future is the fact that study abroad globalizes our children. It enhances their lives and those around them. Studying abroad creates opportunities for our children to broaden their horizons, learn about different cultures and teaches them acceptance of those cultures.

The future of our country and the companies these kids will go on to both work in and create new, will benefit because the children's lives have been enriched with meeting new people and learning their ways. It keeps us all closer to the growing world of technology around the globe.

When people travel, not only study abroad, they do it for many reasons. I, for one, love to learn about the history, art and cultures around the world. What I bring back from these experiences is a wealth of knowledge, take what I have learned and apply it to my own life. Sometimes, I meet people who I know will have a profound affect on me, making my life richer. I believe that allowing our children the chance to experience the world will bring them a renewed understanding of their own lives.

Diversity is a unique thing. Each of us takes from and uses, no matter where we are, what we've learned from connecting to different people and cultures. Studying abroad, traveling for fun, work or whatever reason, will continue to make us all better people.

Please let me know what you think and if you agree that sending our children abroad will benefit them, us and the future of our environment.
