This week we bring you the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara, from the collection of Princess Margaret of Connaught, Queen Victoria's granddaughter.
It is stunning, consisting of large aquamarines surrounded by diamonds in the style of a kokoshnik. The kokoshnik treatment is especially effective in showcasing the large aquamarines featured in the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara.
Princess Margaret wore this tiara with a matching brooch to her wedding with Gustaf Adolf of Sweden in 1905.
When Princess Margaret of Connaught died unexpectedly at the age of 38 in 1920 during childbirth, her jewels were split among her children; the tiara went to her son, Prince Gustaf Adolf.
This set reappeared in 1932 on Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha during her pre-wedding celebrations for her marriage to Margaret's Son, Prince Gustaf Adolf. It was a favorite of Sibylla's and she continued to wear it until she passed it to her eldest daughter, Princess Margaretha.
Margaretha married a businessman, John Ambler. As her involvement with royal events decreased, the tiara was worn less and less. Their daughter, Sibylla Ambler wore it for her wedding in 1998, after which it was completely unseen.
There was speculation during the following years that perhaps the tiara had been sold. However, at Princess Victoria's 2010 wedding, the tiara made a surprise appearance on Princess Margaretha! This was especially surprising because the original press release had said she would be wearing the Baden Fringe Tiara.
Happy Tiara Tuesday everyone!
