The event is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at Panera Bread’s location at 11715 Medlock Bridge Road.

The initiative allows people to dispose of fats, oils and grease -- which can clog pipes and cause sewage to back up in streets and homes -- and destroy sensitive documents. You will also be able to recycle fluorescent bulbs.

To avoid identity theft, the Federal Trade Commission recommends shredding charge receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks and bank statements, expired charge cards and credit offers.

Documents at the event will be shred on-site, and all of the paper will be recycled.

Fluorescent tubes and curly compact fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, which lingers in the environment for years. Keep Johns Creek Beautiful has special equipment that destroys the lights and stores the material and gases for recovery later by a certified fluorescent-light recycling firm.

This event is free for residents of the city of Johns Creek; however, for non-residents, there is a fee of up to $5 to recycle fluorescent bulbs.

For more information about the shredding event, contact Keep Johns Creek Beautiful at 770-551-7766 or info@knfb.org.
