The Fulton County School System said late Thursday that it will dismiss two hours early on Jan. 22 due to the deteriorating weather conditions expected to move into the area on Friday.

The decision comes following a state of emergency announcement issued by Gov. Nathan Deal that will close state offices early tomorrow, the system said.

Fulton elementary schools will dismiss at 12:20 p.m., high schools at 1:30 p.m. and middle schools at 2:05 p.m.

After-school and athletic events on Friday are cancelled, and on Saturday, events before 1 p.m. (including the FCS Science Fair and SAT exams) are cancelled.

School staff and central office employees will dismiss following the release of all students.

North Fulton County is under a Winter Weather Advisory through 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. The advisory means periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain “will cause travel difficulties.”

“Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities (sic)...and use caution while driving,” the National Weather Service states.

The forecast is calling for snow, sleet and freezing rain to move into the area Friday afternoon. That precipitation will transition over to snow Friday night and throughout the day Saturday. Temperatures are expected to remain around freezing on Friday, and remain at or below freezing on Saturday.

Residents should expect 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet and up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulations.
